Montreat is like heaven on earth. And yes!! Sadly.. The area was hit pretty hard especially Black Mountain.. Asheville and Swannona MC… there is lots of damage and a lot of lives lost…. And the water … that I mentioned is a spring water from a spring source here in Florida …. and they even sell large jugs .. with a spout … so one can keep it in the refrigerator.. for their drinking water. I agree about the rain water.. it is really bad … since all they do is pollute our skies and soil … everything … including the water and food. It’s maddening.. and yes!!! We’re blessed to live 3 blocks to the beach.. we have lots of deer.. 🐢 turtles .. raccoons.. black bears and black panthers roaming the island.. the deer walk down our back lane in the early mornings … it’s a nature lovers paradise … and we are very self sufficient …in our backyard..we have a fire pit for cooking… … And in case there’s no electricity … we can sleep …in our tent ..underneath the stars .. and we have a outdoor bathhouse …that we use year round. Before moving here … we lived in the bush of Alaska and the jungle of Costa Rica .. we lived in a Blue Zone in the Nicoya peninsula in 🇨🇷 … watch the documentary the Blue Zones and take peek at the Blue Zone website for some delicious recipes for Black Beans and Longevity Soup. All the best to you.. and Be well and check on Amazon for the natural spring water…Zephyrhills Spring water
Thanks. You have lived in some beautiful places on Earth, and your current island sounds like a wildlife sanctuary! How smart of you to have made off-grid accommodations right in your backyard. Sleeping under the stars where you can actually see them is like dreaming in a state of grace!
Good morning Miss Parker… Thank you for the note and yes!!! We have been blessed to live in many amazing places. And we have always been self sufficient. Frugal ..and my momma taught me the simple ways of life and a beautiful word.. Simplify. And if I didn’t mention to you in a previous note….. I will now ..my husband grew up on his family’s big hop ranch …and they also grew their vegetables and herbs …and they had chickens and pigs etc.. and they hunted for moose each fall in B.C … Anyway.. I posted some information about how one can take dirty water and turn it into clean drinking water…and I thought that you would be interested… some were YouTube videos and videos from Instagram … since the flooding in WNC mountains …there have many folks who have taken dirty water to clean water… Wine to Water in Asheville .. they have a easy way of filtering water ….please go to their website and Instagram page…and they travel world wide setting up these small systems for people who live in villages …where they have no drinking water…and then there’s Franklin Graham (Rev. Billy Grahams son) he & his sisters they grew up in Montreat with their parents Billy & Ruth .. The Grahams beautiful log home was up the mountain side from my grandparents two story cottage … anyway… Franklin Graham has a wonderful charity called Samaritans Purse ( he now lives in Boone, NC) and they serve the world.. him and his volunteers.. he has posted a video of one of his volunteers .. who set up a water filtration machine in downtown Asheville…so folks in Asheville could get clean drinking water… and and one more thing.. After the storm.. The Cajun Navy 2016 … they set up a camp at the Reynolds House in Montreat.. they brought in their horses and pack mules .. since there was no passage on the tnarrow roads in Montreat… the narrow roads had been destroyed…and they delivered food.. water.. and essentials and medicine .. riding their horses and taking their pack mules loaded with supplies… and they rode up the mountain side to deliver much needed supplies to the folks up in those beautiful coves and Hollers… you can see there work on their website… be well and I hope this information helps you.. because one never knows in this day and age what is going to happen next. And there’s always a reason folks meet even via Substack. Blessings.
The self-reliance, ingenuity, and community sharing in some localities is how it should be everywhere, because who knows people's needs better than they themselves and their neighbors? Government has been trying to stop people in dire circumstances from helping each other and exercising personal agency in a bid to make us all dependent on governmental agencies that are inefficient, at best, and which nearly always have a darker agenda behind what they do and whom they "help."
Anyway, what beautiful accounts of hope amidst the likely man-made weather catastrophe you've share!
I'm going to try to find that info on the water filtration systems you've posted. Why don't city neighborhoods ever try to band together and create some redundancy of basic needs for the community? Just as these words were typed, I realized that whosoever comes up an idea should be the one to try to implement it. Hmm.
If we want something done we must never depend on the government to do it for you.. us!!! And that’s why in WNC .. Tennessee.. SC.. & Georgia .. and where we live on the little island of paradise.. we all come together for neighbors in times of crisis.. and in Florida.. be it from a hurricane.. someone house burned to the ground … or anything that sometimes disrupts your life.
Like right now our local lovely thrift store they are having their annual Christmas 🎄 sale at the beautiful Catholic Church downtown by the ocean..
the ladies.. and gentlemen .. volunteers … who so graciously volunteer their time in thrift store and at the church … they have been given back to our community for years!!! All proceeds go towards the food pantry and helping kind folks who needs help.. in paying their rent . or utilities. Some folks who live on the island … they work in the local restaurants.. bar’s .. and the local businesses .. there are no commercial businesses on the island. And when there’s a hurricane or whatever .. our local laundry mat will help wash your clothes for no charge.. the list is long … and another thing that I love about living here … besides the stunning natural wonders.. is because folks recycle everything curb side and you can find some really nice treasures for free.. be it a couch.. outdoor furniture .. or even kitty 🐈⬛ things.. all one must do is hop into their vehicle on Tuesday .. and ride around the neighborhood and see what is placed curb side.. and most of the time there’s a sign that says Free.. I got a brand new LG stand up air conditioner for my laundry room and it works!!! And I do line dry our clothes… I had been looking for a A/C unit for my laundry room for a while and God Blessed me with a Free one… and one afternoon… on my way to the thrift store. I saw this AC unit sitting in the yard of a neighbor and the sign said New.. works well.. Free…. And I was so excited about finding it.. and I will admit .. I’m not as strong as I use to be.. the A/C unit was pretty heavy and I asked the Lord to give me a hand .. while I was struggling to get in the back of my suv ..and He did.
Remember Wine to Water. In Asheville NC. Samaritans Purse in Boone ..water infiltration systems.
