Hmmm...I'm in Australia, off the east coast at balmy latitude 32. We could get a bad fire in late winter or early spring if drought conditions were high and early spring westerlies were pumping from the interior. Not impossible, but our big fires naturally come in summer droughts. (The south of the continent has been in severe drought just this year, while the rest has been soaked.)

Chicago's fire occurred in mid-autumn and Boston's in late-autumn. At such a high latitude, could you get the necessary fire conditions at that time of year without some kind of arsonous intervention?
