However the inflation numbers are based on official inflation, which is way lower than reality. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual payment were about 100,000,000 in today's amount.

Apologies, I noticed that you converted 1870 franks to today in US dollars, so I was way off. A frank then was a quarter dollar. And then money was based on the gold standard. Maybe the better comparison could be to compare monthly wages or monthly food costs.
Harvard tuition in 1880 was $100 per year, now it's $70,000, a 700 times increase.
