Like you, I didn't know that food adulteration goes way back. This topic brought to mind Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle (about the horrors of the meat-packing industry) written in 1904.

Great article! Thank you.

Orwell describes well the crap they fed people in the Bourgeois restaurants of Paris in the 1930's.

**Down and Out in Paris and London** is a significant work by George Orwell, published in 1933, which details his experiences of poverty and life in the slums of Paris and the streets of London. The memoir provides a stark, yet often humorous, portrayal of the struggles faced by those living on the margins of society.

## Overview of the Work

Orwell's narrative begins with his time in Paris, where he worked in various kitchens and lived in cramped, often squalid conditions. He describes the vibrant yet chaotic atmosphere of the **rue du Coq d'Or**, a street filled with eccentric characters, loud quarrels, and the pervasive smell of refuse. The residents include a mix of nationalities—Poles, Arabs, Italians—who share their lives in a community marked by poverty and camaraderie[1][2].
