Having a backup of your computer, when it still works, is the only way to recover after Windows systematically destroys its own installation. Of course, you need to back up your data all the time... I’m running a 10 year old desktop that I installed Linux and a solid state hard drive on. Literally fantastic. Got the PC for free and the hard drive for $60. I haven’t gotten prompted to try out any useless features or new AI. Absolutely worth the time spent figuring out the Linux os, because the button isn’t going to move locations next week when it automatically updates. I don’t even know how to set it to auto update because I just do it when I feel like it.
They told us that Windows 10 was THE LAST edition we would ever need, and FORCED it on us, slowly infiltrating the older versions we were using, and despite telling our computers NO we do NOT want 10, many people woke up one morning to discover their computers were now running 10 with nothing they could do about it.

I work for a Fortune 100 tech company and from what I have seen, these companies are FAR too concerned with trying to out-compete each other than creating an actual GOOD product with GOOD customer service. They are so out of touch now that if they just tried to slow down a little and do just that - create something GOOD, offer good service with it - people would actually go to them over the competition. Its so bad that even the products they make for us internally are shit.
Tried placing an order online, they would not let me unless I gave them a cell#, I deleted the order. Trying to get away from the large grocers (the in your face cameras suck) we’re down to eating just eggs, beef & fruit, we can get these items from regenerative farms & local farms, hope to have chickens soon.

I sold my 2020 Jeep Cherokee and got a 2002 Trailblazer a few months ago. Besides having an anemic *but low-emissions* motor and a transmission that got its jollies shifting gears every three seconds, that Jeep monitored every friggin thing I did, and admonished me when I failed to follow its mandates. The 23 year old Chevy, OTOH, has a real motor and a four-speed transmission which, together, can climb a moderate hill at speed without downshifting three times.
The only monitor my old SUV has, is an alarm that tells me I left the key in the ignition. When I put the Trailblazer in reverse, I can use this cool technology called *rear view mirrors* to see any obstructions in my way. The only penalty is that the Chevy gets about 4 mpg lower mileage than the Jeep: BFD.
I recommend anyone reading this comment, who feels the same way about underpowered cars that *tell you* how to drive: Look for a vehicle that is between 20 and 30 years old, one that has been well-maintained. Buy it, invest $4K or so in a complete suspension and brake rebuild, and drive happy. There will come a day when vehicles such as these will be mandated for crushing (think Cash For Clunkers Redux), and all we will be left with is a choice between overpriced nanny-state cars.

My advice is much the same as yours. Buy the oldest *running* vehicle you can afford. Do your best to fully repair previous mechanical hack jobs. DO NOT USE Synthetic engine oils of any weight or brand. They ALL sludge up engines big time, and fail to provide multiple surface friction coefficient - based on the size of petroleum molecules.
Buy quality "conventional" oils such as Rotella T4, Valvoline, or conventional Castrol brands. Petroleum based lubricants for modern vehicles have become a sick joke. Change your oil every three to four thousand miles, and don't cheat. My vehicles always run well beyond 250,000 miles.
I’m in complete agreement. Buy older cars and find a good mechanic to keep them running. All of this tech is a flood of distractions that doesn’t make driving safer. Unless you shell out cash for a high performing car, most of the new cars drive like shit. They handle like parade floats, with zero road feel, and a blizzard of distracting elements from the dash, to functions that meddle with steering when you change lanes. These woke “features” are designed by techbros who have no clue about driving or what cars are for. Case in point: look at the Tesla truck. Anyone who’s ever had to use a truck for a living, knows the Tesla truck was designed by idiots who have no clue of a truck’s purpose.

They were actually banned due to the fact that Rocky Boy was dead-set determined to eliminate ANY other power source than oil. It is the lithium and the radiation that makes modern EVs killing machines. In the early 1900s there were vehicles successfully running on many types of energy including electricity and steam. The inventors of these were either bought out or murdered. As with so many other historical lies, the "prohibition" had NOTHING to do with alcohol for human consumption -- people were actually producing ethanol to run their vehicles, so it had to be banned.
That is my biggest pet peeve about my "high performance" vehicle. When a lane disappears, or I have to maneuver around a biker or a runner, I am in a death match for control of the steering wheel.
Regarding a rebuilt engine: I recommend not considering a high-mileage used vehicle that does not have an oil pressure gauge. A motor that holds 40 to 50 pounds of oil pressure at idle, and a bit higher at cruising rpm, is a motor that is good to go for thousands more miles. The tailpipe can tell you a story too: Is the exhaust invisible? Is its odor overwhemling? Those two points tell you the story of the valves and the piston rings.
And yeah, I wouldn't buy anything w/o an oil pressure gauge. A must have.
In fact, I had to replace my cluster not long ago in the now indefinitely inop Sierra, and got a new one with a transmission temp gauge as well, which was nice since I didn't have it. I always wondered what that blank gauge spot was for. LOL
A complete rebuild includes struts and/or shocks, but equally important is replacing ball joints, tie rod ends, and the various bushings with which these components attach to the vehicle frame. A ball joint failure at speed can cause a rollover.
On the brake side, in addition to pads and refaced rotors, replace wheel cylinders and (if needed) the master cylinder, then flush and bleed the brakes. Twenty year-old brake fluid will likely be contaminated with water, as brake fluid is hygroscopic.
While you've got the brake rotors off, repack and/or replace the front wheel bearings. Mileage and moisture over time can deteriorate them bigly.
I agree with Paul Vorharnish that one should use "conventional" (i.e., nonsynthetic) engine oils in these older engines, but for a different reason: Synthetic oils will find miniscule leak points in older, well-worn motors, and will create small puddles on your garage floor.

I've done a fair amount of research pertaining to synthetic oils versus conventional. The actual difference comes down to the fact that synthetic oils are refined such that the molecules are ordered to the same *size* in synthetic oils. This may sound like a good idea, but *functional* engines have varying surface friction coefficients due to variations such as pressure, temperature, and actual surface materials. Many modern engines show excessive piston skirt scuffing and/or rod bearing material loss due to the "qualities" inherent in synthetic oils. Of course the manufactures fail to inform the public.
Synthetics are actually processed from "conventional" oils, but further refinement is molecule specific, rather than more or less random molecule sized in conventional oils. Hope you find that interesting...
As to oil, I've always used conventional oil, I've never trusted, even without specific reasons, the synthetic stuff. Oil is the lifeblood of the car, I like to change it religiously every 5k. I got over 500k miles on the original engine of my '99 Silverado, and nearly 400k on other cars I've owned in the past.
Right now my 2004 Sierra has been inop for 7 months due to something that no one can seem to figure out. I think it's a short somewhere.

We did not even know that our 2014 Nissan van had bluetooth in it until i had our EMF meter lying on the seat to check as we passed cell towers, and noticed that it was RED the whole time. I eventually tracked down that the van itself was radiating, the red light came on when we started it up, green when we turned it off. We don't own a cell phone or GPS or any of that suicide gadgetry, had no idea it was equipped for that, and we wanted that antenna OUT! Long story short, no mechanic or dealership locally was able to do it, we finally had to take it to a distant Nissan dealer with a large garage facility. They said no one ever wanted antennas out, they only had people coming in wanting them put IN! My husband's fancy directional meter had located it behind the passenger side dashboard, and to get it out required the whole dash come off. $650 later, we are antenna-free and green light in the van.
BTW we had our meter on in their giant fancy showroom/reception area and it was reading OFF THE SCALE the whole time, really frying everyone working in there. And a note about the highest radiation levels in stores and shops -- it's the card readers at the till!!! DON'T GET NEAR THOSE DANGEROUS WEAPONS!!!!
I am still driving my 2003 Honda Accord with 430,000 km. Always kept up the maintenance and she runs no problem. I also still have my 2009 MacBook. Microsoft Office no longer updates but who cares. My iPhone is about 7 years old with few apps. I really only use it for podcasts; no one talks on phones anymore. But I’m getting to the point of tossing it. Many of us still alive (i'm 76) remember a simpler time without all this tech, including computers and phones. We had time to think, use our common sense,, time to meditate on life. I have never owned a cell phone and never had the slightest inclination to get one.
This is one big reason why there has been a dementia and jab war on seniors, in order to reset the world you need to get rid of ALL the people who remember what it used to be like. I have a real life experience of this. In 2013 I lived in NYC during Superstorm Sandy. We had no power downtown. The line for the usually neglected phone booth was nearly around the entire block. As I waited my turn I watched while people would enter the booth and almost immediately exit, dejected, because they didn't know any actual numbers to call. So maybe calling Mom was 1, Dad was 2, etc., but they didn't remember the actual numbers to call. Being old school, I knew the numbers and was able to contact my husband who drove in to the rescue.

They are telling you that the windows version you are using will "no longer be supported" but that does NOT mean that it will stop working!!!! What it DOES mean is that it will NO LONGER BE UPDATED!!!! YAHOO!!!!! I feel exactly the same as you. I realised something strange was going on when I caught myself insulting a parcel company's customer service chatbot. I just wanted to know what time the package that had been "in delivery for 8 hours" was going to arrive, but the chatbot doesn't allow for that option and kept replying "I don't understand your question. Would you like to re-enter your shipping code so we can tell you if your package is already in delivery?" There was no phone number or an option to ask a HUMAN PERSON so I said a few nasty things to the chatbot only to regret it when I realised they record all chats. Wonderful

But it's a cute little town of 10,000 and lots of farmers and a handful of like minded people. I don't own a smart anything except this stupid phone that I am reading this article on. When I log in to Substack, the screen flashes. I wish I had a slow-motion camera to see if it's a subliminal message (the same occurs on a few select sites, too). Screen flickering can also be "adjusted" by the host or your ISP to the point of influencing the viewer's mood.
Having a backup of your computer, when it still works, is the only way to recover after Windows systematically destroys its own installation. Of course, you need to back up your data all the time... Still, that can save a bundle, because you don't have to buy a new computer (and the newer they are, the worst it gets, as the author also observed).

I’m running a 10 year old desktop that I installed Linux and a solid state hard drive on. Literally fantastic. Got the PC for free and the hard drive for $60. I haven’t gotten prompted to try out any useless features or new AI. Absolutely worth the time spent figuring out the Linux os, because the button isn’t going to move locations next week when it automatically updates. I don’t even know how to set it to auto update because I just do it when I feel like it.

I work for a Fortune 100 tech company and from what I have seen, these companies are FAR too concerned with trying to out-compete each other than creating an actual GOOD product with GOOD customer service. They are so out of touch now that if they just tried to slow down a little and do just that - create something GOOD, offer good service with it - people would actually go to them over the competition. Its so bad that even the products they make for us internally are shit.

I sold my 2020 Jeep Cherokee and got a 2002 Trailblazer a few months ago. Besides having an anemic *but low-emissions* motor and a transmission that got its jollies shifting gears every three seconds, that Jeep monitored every friggin thing I did, and admonished me when I failed to follow its mandates. The 23 year old Chevy, OTOH, has a real motor and a four-speed transmission which, together, can climb a moderate hill at speed without downshifting three times.
The only monitor my old SUV has, is an alarm that tells me I left the key in the ignition. When I put the Trailblazer in reverse, I can use this cool technology called *rear view mirrors* to see any obstructions in my way. The only penalty is that the Chevy gets about 4 mpg lower mileage than the Jeep: BFD.
I recommend anyone reading this comment, who feels the same way about underpowered cars that *tell you* how to drive: Look for a vehicle that is between 20 and 30 years old, one that has been well-maintained. Buy it, invest $4K or so in a complete suspension and brake rebuild, and drive happy. There will come a day when vehicles such as these will be mandated for crushing (think Cash For Clunkers Redux), and all we will be left with is a choice between overpriced nanny-state cars.
Footnote: "Stellantis" (the Euroweenie corporation that owns Chrysler and Jeep) announced last week that they are putting an advertising app on the dashboard screens of their new cars later this year, because it'll generate $20M annual revenue for Stellantis. If it makes car buyers angry, tough shyt: The Corporation comes first.

My advice is much the same as yours. Buy the oldest *running* vehicle you can afford. Do your best to fully repair previous mechanical hack jobs. DO NOT USE Synthetic engine oils of any weight or brand. They ALL sludge up engines big time, and fail to provide multiple surface friction coefficient - based on the size of petroleum molecules.
Buy quality "conventional" oils such as Rotella T4, Valvoline, or conventional Castrol brands. Petroleum based lubricants for modern vehicles have become a sick joke. Change your oil every three to four thousand miles, and don't cheat. My vehicles always run well beyond 250,000 miles.

I’m in complete agreement. Buy older cars and find a good mechanic to keep them running. All of this tech is a flood of distractions that doesn’t make driving safer. Unless you shell out cash for a high performing car, most of the new cars drive like shit. They handle like parade floats, with zero road feel, and a blizzard of distracting elements from the dash, to functions that meddle with steering when you change lanes. These woke “features” are designed by techbros who have no clue about driving or what cars are for. Case in point: look at the Tesla truck. Anyone who’s ever had to use a truck for a living, knows the Tesla truck was designed by idiots who have no clue of a truck’s purpose.

Is it an accident that electric cars are too heavy for the roads and are death traps/fire hazards? In 1920 there were electric cars that were banned because of safety reasons. Those reasons are still valid.
They were actually banned due to the fact that Rocky Boy was dead-set determined to eliminate ANY other power source than oil. It is the lithium and the radiation that makes modern EVs killing machines. In the early 1900s there were vehicles successfully running on many types of energy including electricity and steam. The inventors of these were either bought out or murdered. As with so many other historical lies, the "prohibition" had NOTHING to do with alcohol for human consumption -- people were actually producing ethanol to run their vehicles, so it had to be banned.
That is my biggest pet peeve about my "high performance" vehicle. When a lane disappears, or I have to maneuver around a biker or a runner, I am in a death match for control of the steering wheel.
I consider those nanny steering assists to be dangerous for quick maneuvers.

When you say "complete suspension and brake rebuild" do you simply mean new struts and rotors, or what?
I'll never buy anything beyond a 2009. Even having to drop a new engine in is less expensive than a new car.
Regarding a rebuilt engine: I recommend not considering a high-mileage used vehicle that does not have an oil pressure gauge. A motor that holds 40 to 50 pounds of oil pressure at idle, and a bit higher at cruising rpm, is a motor that is good to go for thousands more miles. The tailpipe can tell you a story too: Is the exhaust invisible? Is its odor overwhemling? Those two points tell you the story of the valves and the piston rings.

In fact, I had to replace my cluster not long ago in the now indefinitely inop Sierra, and got a new one with a transmission temp gauge as well, which was nice since I didn't have it. I always wondered what that blank gauge spot was for. LOL
A complete rebuild includes struts and/or shocks, but equally important is replacing ball joints, tie rod ends, and the various bushings with which these components attach to the vehicle frame. A ball joint failure at speed can cause a rollover.
On the brake side, in addition to pads and refaced rotors, replace wheel cylinders and (if needed) the master cylinder, then flush and bleed the brakes. Twenty year-old brake fluid will likely be contaminated with water, as brake fluid is hygroscopic.
While you've got the brake rotors off, repack and/or replace the front wheel bearings. Mileage and moisture over time can deteriorate them bigly.
I agree with Paul Vorharnish that one should use "conventional" (i.e., nonsynthetic) engine oils in these older engines, but for a different reason: Synthetic oils will find miniscule leak points in older, well-worn motors, and will create small puddles on your garage floor.

I've done a fair amount of research pertaining to synthetic oils versus conventional. The actual difference comes down to the fact that synthetic oils are refined such that the molecules are ordered to the same *size* in synthetic oils. This may sound like a good idea, but *functional* engines have varying surface friction coefficients due to variations such as pressure, temperature, and actual surface materials. Many modern engines show excessive piston skirt scuffing and/or rod bearing material loss due to the "qualities" inherent in synthetic oils. Of course the manufactures fail to inform the public.
Synthetics are actually processed from "conventional" oils, but further refinement is molecule specific, rather than more or less random molecule sized in conventional oils. Hope you find that interesting...

As to oil, I've always used conventional oil, I've never trusted, even without specific reasons, the synthetic stuff. Oil is the lifeblood of the car, I like to change it religiously every 5k. I got over 500k miles on the original engine of my '99 Silverado, and nearly 400k on other cars I've owned in the past.
Right now my 2004 Sierra has been inop for 7 months due to something that no one can seem to figure out. I think it's a short somewhere.

We did not even know that our 2014 Nissan van had bluetooth in it until i had our EMF meter lying on the seat to check as we passed cell towers, and noticed that it was RED the whole time. I eventually tracked down that the van itself was radiating, the red light came on when we started it up, green when we turned it off. We don't own a cell phone or GPS or any of that suicide gadgetry, had no idea it was equipped for that, and we wanted that antenna OUT! Long story short, no mechanic or dealership locally was able to do it, we finally had to take it to a distant Nissan dealer with a large garage facility. They said no one ever wanted antennas out, they only had people coming in wanting them put IN! My husband's fancy directional meter had located it behind the passenger side dashboard, and to get it out required the whole dash come off. $650 later, we are antenna-free and green light in the van.
BTW we had our meter on in their giant fancy showroom/reception area and it was reading OFF THE SCALE the whole time, really frying everyone working in there. And a note about the highest radiation levels in stores and shops -- it's the card readers at the till!!! DON'T GET NEAR THOSE DANGEROUS WEAPONS!!!!
I am still driving my 2003 Honda Accord with 430,000 km. Always kept up the maintenance and she runs no problem. I also still have my 2009 MacBook. Microsoft Office no longer updates but who cares. My iPhone is about 7 years old with few apps. I really only use it for podcasts; no one talks on phones anymore. But I’m getting to the point of tossing it. Many of us still alive (i'm 76) remember a simpler time without all this tech, including computers and phones. We had time to think, use our common sense,, time to meditate on life. I have never owned a cell phone and never had the slightest inclination to get one.
This is one big reason why there has been a dementia and jab war on seniors, in order to reset the world you need to get rid of ALL the people who remember what it used to be like. This was done between the 1850s and 1940s by locking up hundreds of thousands of people in the insane asylums, many of which housed thousands of people in repurposed Old World buildings, where they were lab animals for experiments with things like electroshock therapy and worse.
The best thing that could possibly happen to humanity is a massive power failure. We would instantly be forced to get back to basics and simple living. None of the digital ID system would work including the 5G weaponry and cell phones, nothing computerised would work including gas pumps and stores. EVERYTHING most people rely on would fall apart. The only survivors would be those who know skills of how to take care of themselves and who know how to build communities to work together locally, which is how we should be living our lives.
Since cell phones are now considered by most people to be necessary bodily appendages, their lives would fall apart if their phone didn't work. They've got their whole brains, whole lives, downloaded onto their personal suicide weapon, which they even willingly purchased, and many, especially the younger ones, would have no idea what to do, how to function, how to live at all without them. And it is the "First World" that would come crashing down, not the "Third World", where people still know how to provide for themselves.
I have a real life experience of this. In 2013 I lived in NYC during Superstorm Sandy. We had no power downtown. The line for the usually neglected phone booth was nearly around the entire block. As I waited my turn I watched while people would enter the booth and almost immediately exit, dejected, because they didn't know any actual numbers to call. So maybe calling Mom was 1, Dad was 2, etc., but they didn't remember the actual numbers to call. Being old school, I knew the numbers and was able to contact my husband who drove in to the rescue.

And how about GPS -- there are people who can't even find their way to and from work without theirs, even use it to go to the grocery store -- and what happens when it is "turned off"? People are LOST, which is exactly where the Controllers want us to be. And their entire lives and brains downloaded onto a cell phone -- no cell service? Their lives fall apart, they are totally lost.
If you do not use your memory, and/or your built in navigational skills, (let alone your intuition and common sense and critical thinking abilities) you will lose them. It's all about training people to rely on some tech outside themselves, so they can be completely controlled from without.

Yes, always say "Agent" immediately before being looped, and, if that doesn't work, say "operator," "real person," or my favorite, "human being." If you don't avoid the frustration, the agent makes a note of your "tone." I usually put a project too do or good reading on the desk to distract me from the automated hell.

Planned obsolescence (making a product last just long enough to outlive the warranty) ensures that companies have repeat customers on high-dollar items that used to last 30 years. Now they can sell 5 or 6 sets of washers and dryers to you in that same timespan, for more money, of course, since the latest models are "new and improved."

I am 65 y. o..
I do not own an auto, e-bike, carry a phone, never am I interested in promos - in fact I get right nasty when a simple transaction requests e-mail, telephone# or multi-Corpse "value cards".
Over the last ~ 10 years I have had my social network reduced from ~ 40-50 people to maybe 4 or 5, depending if they are in the area. Those that left found it too inconvenient that I am not "text responsive" or having to leave a message that I might not get to for a couple of days. The biggest change happened during CoronaPrank.
I enjoy going into govmnt institution or cafe line ups carrying a novel while virtually all are peened to their phones.
For sanity, I use Linux OS with no VPN.

Switch to Linux. Windows is only going to get worse.
We have until October to switch away from Windows, Microsoft is ending the current system and will probably charge too much for the new one.
They are telling you that the windows version you are using will "no longer be supported" but that does NOT mean that it will stop working!!!! What it DOES mean is that it will NO LONGER BE UPDATED!!!! YAHOO!!!!! Remember, those updates we get constantly are NOT about preventing "viruses", they are about implanting more and more elaborate spyware on our computers. My husband has a computer still running windows 7. Also our windows 10 computers are running on windows 7 "shells" which make them look like W7, which is much more "user friendly". But yes the ultimate solution is Linux, if you've got the knowhow to set it all up.

I feel exactly the same as you. I realised something strange was going on when I caught myself insulting a parcel company's customer service chatbot. I just wanted to know what time the package that had been "in delivery for 8 hours" was going to arrive, but the chatbot doesn't allow for that option and kept replying "I don't understand your question. Would you like to re-enter your shipping code so we can tell you if your package is already in delivery?" There was no phone number or an option to ask a HUMAN PERSON so I said a few nasty things to the chatbot only to regret it when I realised they record all chats. Wonderful
I simply garble something unintelligible and I usually get forwarded to a person. Sometimes it simply says that it cannot understand you and says goodbye.
when I leave the nasty or vulgar comments, whether in chat or on the phone, I make a point of mentioning they are for the benefit of the people checking the recordings later

Thank you, it's comforting to know that I'm not the only rude vulgarian who insults chatbots. Next time I will refer to the people who check the chats.😉
