After the results came in (black mold, the wurst) an' the threat ta call in public health in (this was in NYC btw so some tenant protections eggzisted...), the landlord reneged an' remediated--it took 4 days with dudes in hazmat suits & industrial air cleaners an' FINALLY we could breath again an' my girl stopped retchin'... Maybe it's not the mold itself that's to blame, but the decomposition gases caused by the digestion of the mold? The decomposition gases of moisture, drywall, paint, and other chemicals? By the mold. Molds have been around for millions of years, but the problems have only become more apparent with the advent of new building materials. But there's a lot of money in them, so they're not going to be blamed.

As a layman, if I had been entrusted with it, I would have built nests for mice from today's modern building materials and created the conditions that promote the appearance and life of mold. Then I would have put the mice in them to live in. I would have recorded the quality of the air every day, the gases in it, the amount of mold spores, the mice's food, etc., and their condition. And after they died, I would have examined them to see what caused them. And if it was black mold, then by repeating the experiment and with the same result, I could have considered it proven.

I eat mold quite regularly. I love a good bleu cheese as well as some Brie. Love the taste that mold brings to it, and haven't gotten sick from eating it. I'm not allergic to penicillin either, and it's thanks to mold we have that.
