(I know, I know...they blew up the tiny balsa wood structures back in some studio somewhere, but one likes to think they were doing something out in the desert.)

Don't feel bad about it. I did too. I only began to wake up a few years ago when I started listening to some good truther podcasts and reading some intelligent online conspiracy forum commenters:).
The government had a motion picture studio that rivalled Hollywood. It was called Lookout Mountain and one of the locations was at Laurel Canyon in LA. I suspect they assembled the footage of the moon landing, nuclear bomb 'explosions', and perhaps the renditions of the twin towers collapsing there. The government proclaimed that it shut the studio down, but I suspect it went underground, figuratively speaking.
Laurel Canyon was also the birth of the CIA controlled Hippie movement with fake music bands like the Byrds, the Doors. It wasn't just the Monkees that were fake. It seems other unknown musicians actually recorded the studio music which was attributed to 'artists' that the public emulated with their clothes, hair styles and DRUG USE. The CIA is still in control of most of the drug 'trafficking', all the way from growing the drugs, to their distribution.
I only found out about lookout mountain recently. All fascinating stuff. Jim Morrisons dad being the captain of a ship involved with a false flag.. Stuart Copeland’s dad in the CIA. The Beatles not writing their own songs and spreading hippie bullshit and LSD all over the place all speak volumes about what the intelligence agencies were up to. The footage of the plane(s) hitting twin towers is clearly fake. I never associated that with the fake nuke explosions and moon landing films though.
